IGU targets schools, Khelo India to popularise golf
The Indian Golf Union is hoping to build on recent successes by Indian golfers to turn India into a golng powerhouse.
With the government actively supporting the sport including providing assistance under TOPS with an eye on the Paris Olympics, the IGU has initiated activities like ‘Training the Trainers’ to provide professional training and certication to golf coaches across the country.
“We have spent more than a year in creating a base and have had fair success in raising funds and are in the process of getting more through activities like creating an Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL),” IGU president Brijinder Singh told a select gathering here.
“We have the numbers, we have a coaches certication system and with programmes like ‘ Teaching our teachers’ and getting more people to play the game, we are hopeful India will be a golng force. Our aim is to get golf into Khelo India and make golf part of school curricula,” he added.
He also said that the IGU is currently organising a three-day workshop with Master Trainers from the Confederation of Professional Golf — an association of National PGAs — for Indian coaches, assistant teachers and oªcials.
