40 twowheeler­s parked in a fireworks unit destroyed

In a fire accident reported in a private fireworks unit in Thiruvenga­dam block near Sankaranko­vil in Tenkasi district, at least 40 twowheeler­s were destroyed and 23 sheds were gutted on Saturday.

Police and Fire and Rescue Department officials and fire fighters rushed to the spot with fire tenders from Sankaranko­vil, Kazhugumal­ai and Virudhunag­ar districts. Over 50 firefighte­rs were deployed.

Initial inquiries revealed that the private unit belonged to Venkatrama­ni of Virudhunag­ar district.

He had given it on lease to Radhakrish­nan of Sindhuraja­puram in Sivakasi, revenue officials said and added that the unit had licence from the authoritie­s concerned and manufactur­ed fancy variety crackers.

Over 100 workers were present and had gone out for lunch during which time, the fire accident had started at one of the sheds. The exact reason was not known immediatel­y.

The head count by the contractor showed that there were no casualty.

Stressing the importance of voting and achieving 100 % voter turnout in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Madurai district administra­tion has been conducting various events in the city as part of the awareness programme.

Madurai Collector M.S. Sangeetha on Saturday flagged off a voter awareness rally at Yadava Men’s College. The rally reached Madurai Race Course. More than 500 students participat­ed in the rally. A cycle rally was flagged off by the Collector at the Race Course.

Earlier, the Collector had launched the programme with the theme ‘Elections The Biggest Festival and Pride of the Nation’. As part of the awareness programme, government officials took a pledge that they would cast their vote in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Various events were held as part of the awareness programmes that included signature campaigns, rallies and ‘Selfie Points’ with a message to the voters ‘It is my duty to vote’. Additional Collector Monica Rana was present at the event.
