Gaming body warns of action against ads on online gambling

The Tamil Nadu Online Gaming Authority (TNOGA) on Thursday said it had “proposed to take stringent action” against those who advertise online gambling and online games of chance and betting, among others, to promote their website/applicatio­ns in the State.

Those who wish to share informatio­n about online gambling or betting activities, or ožer suggestion­s to regulate online games could do so at https://tnonlinega­mingauthor­ity.tn.gov.in/ or email tnoga@tn.gov.in, the TNOGA chairperso­n said in a release.

The Tamil Nadu Prohibitio­n of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Act, 2022, provides for prohibitin­g online gambling and online games of chance, betting, among others. Violators are liable for imprisonme­nt that may extend to 3 months or a †ne of up to ₹5,000 or both. “...The Act prohibits †nancial institutio­ns/payment gateways from engaging in transactio­ns towards online gambling or online game of chance,” the release said.

The advertisem­ent of online gambling services and online games of chance are prohibited under the Act. No person shall make or cause to make any advertisem­ent in any media, including electronic means of communicat­ion, in Tamil Nadu that promotes or induces (directly or indirectly) any person to indulge in online gambling with money or other stakes, the Act states.

It also provides for a penalty of imprisonme­nt, which may extend to one year or a †ne extending up to ₹5 lakh or both for the persons/company indulging in such advertisem­ents. “If they repeat the same ožence, they are liable for one to three years of imprisonme­nt and a †ne of ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh.”

‘Remove chapter’

Meanwhile, Manithaney­a Makkal Katchi president M.H. Jawahirull­ah has requested the School Education Department to remove a chapter in the maths book for Class VI students of the Tamil Nadu State Board that explains integers using a card game. In a statement, he said that there were other ways to explain the concept and introducin­g card games to students was unacceptab­le.
