Former junior India basketball­er Bobit Mathew found dead

Former junior India basketball player Bobit Mathew, a former Kerala captain, was found dead in his room in Kannur on Sunday.

Bobit, who was employed with the BSNL, had played for the KSEB earlier. He was 42 and is survived by wife Tintu and daughter Angelo.

The tall Bobit who hails from Chandanaka­mpara, one of Kerala’s leading basketball nurseries, was moulded into a fine player at the Kozhikode SAI centre and was a part of the Indian team that played in the 2000 junior Asian Championsh­ip in Malaysia.

He had represente­d the State for seven years and was a member of the Kerala team that finished runnerup in the senior Nationals.

He was named as Kerala’s best player in 2000 and was awarded the P.S. Viswappan gold medal during the State senior championsh­ip in Thalassery.

“We are planning to start the scholarshi­p in doubles too in future,” said R. Rakesh Sekhar, secretary, KBSA, on Monday.

The KBSA has also decided to run three zonal training centres — at Ernakulam, Karunagapa­lly (Kollam) and Ottapalam (Palakkad) — where promising players will be offered longterm coaching either at ‘no cost’ or on subsidised rates. After bundling out IOB for 57, Masters CC, riding on centuries from Rohan Nair (118) and Abhijith Praveen (102), declared its first innings for 387 for five.

IOB was skittled out for 88 in the second innings with P.M. Anfal (6/16) and M.U. Harikrishn­an (3/24) sharing the spoils. In another A division match, Shines CC scored a ninewicket win over Ranji CC.
