Vigil against viral hepatitis after 6 deaths

The middle-aged man from Chaliyar panchayat affected by viral hepatitis died in a hospital in Kozhikode on Friday. One of his relatives too had tested positive for viral hepatitis on March 19, and precaution­ary measures were taken.

Most cases were reported from Pothukal, Kuzhimanan­na, Omanur, Pookkottur, Morayur, and Peruvallur panchayats as well as within Malappuram municipal limits.

Dr. Renuka said that viral hepatitis could turn deadly if not taken care of. Fever, lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting, yellow colour in eyes and urine are the symptoms. If the disease aggravates, it can a¢ect the liver and can lead to the death of the patient, said Dr. Renuka.

Never ignore symptoms: DMO

She warned the people against seeking unscientif­ic means of remedy for the disease. “Never ignore the symptoms. If conrmed, treat the disease scientically. Otherwise, loss of life will be the result,” said Dr. Renuka.

She advised that people should avoid defecating in the open and asked them to wash their hands with soap after using toilet and before food as well.

She also suggested chlorinati­on of wells, other water sources, and tanks and sumps. “People should drink only boiled water, and use chlorinate­d water for cooking.” Fruits and vegetables should be used after washing several times. Cooked food should not be used after it is left open for a long time. Dr. Renuka said that people should contact health workers immediatel­y on nding symptoms of viral hepatitis.
