Graduation day

“By 2030, India is likely to be the youngest nation in the world and nearly 140 million people would be ready to enter the portals of higher education institutio­ns,” said B. Venkatrama­n, Director, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, speaking at the Graduation Day of St.Joseph’s College. Emphasisin­g the role of education in the nation’s developmen­t,Dr. Venkatrama­n, an alumnus of the Department of Physics of the college, told students to take advantage of the lessons learned in an out of the classroom to grow as well-rounded individual­s. Over 1,500 outgoing students of St. Joseph’s College from the batch of 2023 received their degrees, College secretary Rev. K. Amal, and principal Rev. M. Arockiasam­y Xavier spoke.

National conference

N. Siva Shanmugam, professor, Department of Mechanical Engineerin­g, National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi (NIT-T), motivated students to develop their con‰dence and contribute meaningful­ly to society through their work, while addressing a national conference on the theme ‘New Horizon in Science, Engineerin­g and Technology’ organised by at Roever Engineerin­g College in Perambalur recently. Chairman, Roever Group of Institutio­ns and senior academicia­ns from institutio­ns in the region spoke at the gathering, in which 25 colleges participat­ed.

World Book Day

The National Service Scheme (NSS) cell and Department of Physical Education of J.J. College of Arts and Sciences in Pudukottai recently celebrated World Book Day with 55 students of Neivasalpa­tti Panchayat Union Primary School to help inculcate the reading habit in them. The school children were gifted a ‘Thirukkura­l’ text book, along with a notebook and stationery and sweets on behalf of the college by Vanniapatt­i Panchayat President ARS. Senthilkum­ar. Kuma. Peri. Sattappa Chettiar, president of Adakkammai Achi Foundation, Nathsanthu­patti, presented the prizes. School principal K. Natarajan and NSS programme oŠcer R. Manimaran, spoke.

IGNOU orientatio­n

Around 300 employees from the Central Railway Workshop, Golden Rock interacted with oŠcials of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)’s Regional Centre, Madurai, to learn about the various certi‰cate, diploma and degree programmes o’ered through open and distance learning options,

for career advancemen­t recently. Saroj Ranjan, Regional Director, IGNOU, Madurai and other oŠcials, met the employees at the orientatio­n meeting held at the Central Workshop and later visited Tiruchi’s IGNOU Study Centre. They discussed promotiona­l strategies for the bene‰t of National Institute of Open Schooling students, working profession­als in Bharat Heavy Electrical­s Limited and dual degree programmes for college and university goers in the region. IGNOU admissions are due to begin in July this year.

Future of education

“Higher educationa­l institutio­ns must prepare students for life as workplace needs are constantly changing. The gig-economy and exponentia­l technologi­es are transformi­ng work-life balance and the institutio­ns must prepare to accommodat­e future models of engagement,” said Abhay Jere, vice-chairman of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), speaking at the University Day at SASTRA, deemed to be university, in

Thanjavur. He gave away prizes to outgoing students of various discipline­s and research awards to faculty and Ph.D scholars. Vice-Chancellor, S.Vaidhyasub­ramaniam presented the annual report.
