Not just a fashionista

archana subramanian chats with Sonam Kapoor, who is revelling in the success of Prem

- Ratan Dhan Payo

‘‘ How can I ever be compared to a diva like Madhuri? I have just begun and have a long way to go. Salman obviously said ,, that to promote the film

She’s hip, hot and happening. Hailing from a filmy family, she swayed her way into Bollywood with Saawariya. A style icon, a fashionista, and an actress who has impressed over the years, with movies like Raanjhanaa, Khoobsurat and the recent Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Sonam Kapoor has convinced critics and audiences alike that she is more than just a fashionista. Sonam, who has won the hearts of many with her performance as Maithili (a modern princess who believes in traditional values) in Prem Ratan… says, “I consider myself lucky to be paired opposite Salman yet again. This has been the most anticipated film of the year, and being a part of it is another feather to my cap.” What’s her reaction to Salman saying Sonam was better than Madhuri in Hum Aapke Hain Koun? She laughs. “He obviously said that to promote the film... How can I ever be compared to a diva like Madhuri? I have just begun and have a long way to go. But yeah, Salman is like that. He’s very sweet.”

Prem Ratan… has had a massive opening—it made Rs. 40 crore (approximately) on the day of release. “Even though the congratulatory messages started pouring in way before the movie’s release, I wanted to see how the people would react. Now that I know, I’m very happy about the reception. I’m also happy that people now understand my potential as an actor.” Beneath her glamorous self hides an aspiring director. “From Deepika to Alia, I would like to direct them all. I’m looking for a script that will get me started.” Sonam now awaits the release of her next film, a biopic titled Neerja, in which she plays Neerja Bhanot, the airhostess who lost her life while trying to save the lives of passengers from terrorists who had hijacked a flight in 1986. The film is slated for release next year, and Sonam will be hoping that it further cements her reputation as a talented actor.
