- AMARNATH TEWARY

PATNA: Amid fast-changing developments in Bihar on Saturday over the formation of new government led by Nitish Kumar, the Bihar Pradesh Congress Legislature Party, in a surprise move, passed a resolution requesting the party leadership to make Rahul Gandhi president of the party.

“The CLP of newly-elected 27 MLAs passed a resolution to this effect,” party general secretary and in charge of the Bihar unit, C. P. Joshi told media persons here. He said demands for giving the top post to Mr. Gandhi were being received from across the country, including Bihar.

“A new vigour will be infused in the party if Mr. Gandhi is given full command. Time is ripe to take a decision on the issue,” said Mr. Joshi.

Of the 41 seats contested in the just-concluded Assembly poll, the Congress registered win in 27 seats getting 6.7 per cent of the total vote-share, the highest after a long gap. “From just four seats, our strength has gone up to 27 in the Assembly and in 2020 we will achieve our target,” he declared.

State party chief Ashok Chaudhury and Mr. Joshi had met the party vice-president in Delhi and apprised him about the political situation in the State. Party sources told

The Hindu that altogether five party legislators would become Ministers in the Nitish Cabinet. Earlier in the day, the newly-elected Congress MLAs and leaders authorised party president Sonia Gandhi to elect legislature party leader.
