Defence staff held for sexual misconduct
He was court-martialled for misbehaving with lady cadet at OTA
A physiotherapy assistant at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) was imprisoned after he was convicted of sexually assaulting a lady cadet on the OTA premises three years ago.
The offender J. Prakash was working as Naik — physiotherapy assistant, at OTA. On April 11, 2015, he touched the lady cadet inappropriately, on the pretext of physiotherapy treatment. He assaulted her again after two days.
Following her complaint, he was tried before the District Court Martial on three charges, including Section 354 of IPC, which deals with using criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage modesty and for administering physiotherapy treatment to the lady cadet in the absence of a woman attendant, contrary to the standard operating procedure. The District Court Martial dismissed Prakash from service and sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for two years.
The sentence was confirmed by Lieutenant General S.T. Upasani, General Officer Commanding, Southern Area, as required by law. The Army unit sent Prakash to the custody of Nandambakkam Inspector S. Sivakumar with a warrant to execute the sentence. He took Prakash into custody.
