30 held for protesting against tardy relief work
Agitations were held last month
The police in Nagapattinam district arrested 30 persons on Saturday in connection with protests held last month condemning the tardy pace of relief work in the aftermath of Cyclone Gaja.
The arrested persons had been booked on various charges, including damaging police vehicles, staging and assaulting a Revenue Department official during relief operations in the wake of the disaster.
The Thalaignayiru police arrested 20 persons in
connection with two cases, registered on November 18 and 24, primarily for staging road blockades.
Assault and damage
The Vettaikarinirupu police arrested 10 persons on charges of assault and preventing government servants from discharging their duty, disrupting traffic and damaging government vehicles during agitations held on November 17.
The arrested persons had been remanded in custody, police sources said.
