30 held for protest­ing against tardy re­lief work

Ag­i­ta­tions were held last month

The po­lice in Nagapattinam dis­trict ar­rested 30 per­sons on Satur­day in con­nec­tion with protests held last month con­demn­ing the tardy pace of re­lief work in the af­ter­math of Cy­clone Gaja.

The ar­rested per­sons had been booked on var­i­ous charges, in­clud­ing dam­ag­ing po­lice ve­hi­cles, stag­ing and as­sault­ing a Rev­enue De­part­ment of­fi­cial dur­ing re­lief op­er­a­tions in the wake of the disas­ter.

The Tha­laig­nayiru po­lice ar­rested 20 per­sons in

road-rokos

con­nec­tion with two cases, reg­is­tered on Novem­ber 18 and 24, pri­mar­ily for stag­ing road block­ades.

As­sault and da­m­age

The Vet­taikarinirupu po­lice ar­rested 10 per­sons on charges of as­sault and pre­vent­ing gov­ern­ment ser­vants from dis­charg­ing their duty, dis­rupt­ing traf­fic and dam­ag­ing gov­ern­ment ve­hi­cles dur­ing ag­i­ta­tions held on Novem­ber 17.

The ar­rested per­sons had been re­manded in cus­tody, po­lice sources said.
