Seven ar­rested in crack­down on sex de­ter­mi­na­tion tests

The Ra­jasthan gov­ern­ment’s Pre-Con­cep­tion and Pre-Na­tal Di­ag­nos­tic Tech­niques (PCPNDT) team has ar­rested seven per­sons al­legedly in­volved in sex de­ter­mi­na­tion tests in three op­er­a­tions. The crack­down was done dur­ing the past week in Ra­jasthan, Gu­jarat and Pun­jab.

Na­tional Health Mis­sion’s State Di­rec­tor Naveen Jain, who is the ap­pro­pri­ate author­ity un­der the PCPNDT Act, said on Satur­day that the ac­cused were ar­rested at Chomu, near Jaipur, and in dif­fer­ent towns of Gu­jarat and Pun­jab. “The op­er­a­tions in­volved care­ful plan­ning for seizure of sonog­ra­phy machines and red-handed ar­rest of the ac­cused,” he said.

With these ar­rests, a to­tal of 340 per­sons have so far been ar­rested and sent to jail un­der the PCPNDT Act, which pro­hibits tests to de­ter­mine the gen­der of a child be­fore birth, Mr. Jain said.

The PCPNDT team con­ducted 45 in­ter­State op­er­a­tions in Ut­tar Pradesh, Gu­jarat, Delhi, Haryana, Mad­hya Pradesh and Pun­jab, he said.
