Seven arrested in crackdown on sex determination tests
The Rajasthan government’s Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) team has arrested seven persons allegedly involved in sex determination tests in three operations. The crackdown was done during the past week in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Punjab.
National Health Mission’s State Director Naveen Jain, who is the appropriate authority under the PCPNDT Act, said on Saturday that the accused were arrested at Chomu, near Jaipur, and in different towns of Gujarat and Punjab. “The operations involved careful planning for seizure of sonography machines and red-handed arrest of the accused,” he said.
With these arrests, a total of 340 persons have so far been arrested and sent to jail under the PCPNDT Act, which prohibits tests to determine the gender of a child before birth, Mr. Jain said.
The PCPNDT team conducted 45 interState operations in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Delhi, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab, he said.
