All set for ‘Makar­avi­lakku’ to­day

Ayyappa devo­tees con­verge on Sabari­mala for an­nual fes­ti­val

The sa­cred grove (’poonka­vanom’) of Ayyappa at Sabari­mala is all set to cel­e­brate the an­nual ‘Makar­avi­lakku’ fes­ti­val on Mon­day.

Devo­tees from dif­fer­ent parts of the coun­try have started camp­ing at the ‘San­nid­hanam’ and on the sur­round­ing hill­sides to wor­ship the ‘Makar­avi­lakku deeparad­hana’ to be per­formed at Pon­nam­bal­amedu on Mon­day.

The pil­grim turnout on Sun­day was mod­er­ate com­pared to the huge crowd on the eve of the pre­vi­ous fes­ti­val.

The pro­ces­sion car­ry­ing the ‘Thiruvab­ha­ranam’ (sa­cred jew­ellery of the de­ity) will reach the ‘San­nid­hanam’ by 6.20 p.m. on Mon­day.

The de­ity will be dec­o­rated with it prior to the ‘deeparad­hana’ to be per­formed between 6.30 p.m. and 6.40 p.m. The ce­les­tial star ‘Makara’, known as ‘Makara­jy­oti’, will ap­pear on the eastern hori­zon of the ‘San­nid­hanam’ by this time.

The ‘Makar­avi­lakku deeparad­hana’ at Pon­nam­bal­amedu, a re­mote hill fac­ing the tem­ple, will be per­formed in the next few min­utes.
