All set for ‘Makaravilakku’ today
Ayyappa devotees converge on Sabarimala for annual festival
The sacred grove (’poonkavanom’) of Ayyappa at Sabarimala is all set to celebrate the annual ‘Makaravilakku’ festival on Monday.
Devotees from different parts of the country have started camping at the ‘Sannidhanam’ and on the surrounding hillsides to worship the ‘Makaravilakku deeparadhana’ to be performed at Ponnambalamedu on Monday.
The pilgrim turnout on Sunday was moderate compared to the huge crowd on the eve of the previous festival.
The procession carrying the ‘Thiruvabharanam’ (sacred jewellery of the deity) will reach the ‘Sannidhanam’ by 6.20 p.m. on Monday.
The deity will be decorated with it prior to the ‘deeparadhana’ to be performed between 6.30 p.m. and 6.40 p.m. The celestial star ‘Makara’, known as ‘Makarajyoti’, will appear on the eastern horizon of the ‘Sannidhanam’ by this time.
The ‘Makaravilakku deeparadhana’ at Ponnambalamedu, a remote hill facing the temple, will be performed in the next few minutes.
