A controversy erupted after Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday backed out of a programme organised here to “celebrate menstruation” in a bid to end the stigma associated with the biological process.

The two-day programme ‘Aarpo Aarthavam’ (Hurray menses!) was organised by activist groups in response to protests over a Supreme Court verdict permitting the entry of women of all ages into the Sabarimala temple.

The organisers had informed the media that Mr. Vijayan would participate in the programme.

Citing Mr. Vijayan’s schedule prepared by his office, the sources said the Chief Minister had four back-toback programmes in Kochi on Sunday, but the ‘Aarpo Aarthavam’ event was not on the list.
