Kolkata police arrest 3 ATM thieves in city; one escapes
The suspects were hiding in a lodge in Triplicane
The cyber cell of the Kolkata police arrested three men who were hiding in a lodge in Triplicane after committing an ATM heist in Kolkata using fake debit cards. However, one managed to give the police the slip.
The police gave the names of the arrested as Vijay Kumar Mandal, 22, R. Juhendaer Kumar Mandal, 23, and S. Baskar Kumar, 25, from Jharkhand. They were arrested based on a tip-off from Nawaz, one of the gang members who was caught in Kolkata a couple of days ago.
“The four were involved in an ATM heist. They used to tamper with the surveillance cameras to zoom in on the debit card pin number. They then used fake cards and swindled money,” said a police officer from the Triplicane station.
Recently, Nawaz was caught, and cyber police from the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate limits traced the cellphone number of the three to Chennai.
“Further investigations revealed that they were in a lodge in Triplicane. Two sub-inspectors from Kolkata landed in Chennai and with the help of the local police, nabbed the three. Nearly ₹25 lakh was seized from them,” said the police officer.
Among the team members that came from Kolkata, three had gone to book return tickets and one was asked to keep an eye on the three accused at Triplicane police station. Around 4.30 p.m., Vijay Kumar Mandal said he wanted to go to the toilet and asked the policeman from Kolkata to unlock his handcuffs. Once he was free, he pushed the policeman and fled the spot.
