India all-rounder Vijay Shankar on Sunday said being promoted to bat at the crucial No. 3 position came as a big surprise, and that he returns home from his maiden tour of Australia and New Zealand as a much improved cricketer.

Vijay Shankar batted at No. 3 in two of the three three T20Is against New Zealand, scoring 43 in the final game and 23 in the opener.

Going forward, Vijay Shankar said he would love to bat higher up the order.

“It was a big surprise for me when they asked me to bat at three. That is a big thing. I was focused on playing according to the situation,” said Vijay Shankar.

“These (Australia and New Zealand) series I have learnt a lot. In batting, just watching seniors like Virat (Kohli), Rohit (Sharma) and (MS) Dhoni, how they go about their job, I learnt a lot.”
