Tobacco products worth over ₹2 crore seized

Three men arrested in Thirumulla­ivoyal

The police on Friday seized 15 tonnes of banned tobacco products, worth over ₹2 crore, from a godown in Thirumulla­ivoyal and arrested three suspects for storing the contraband.

The Tamil Nadu government has banned the sale of gutkha, pan masala and chewable food which contain tobacco and nicotine as ingredient­s. Frequent raids are being conducted on godowns and outlets, which sell them illegally.

Following informatio­n from the Organised Crime Intelligen­ce Unit (Crime), the police raided a godown in SIDCO, Kattur, Thirumulla­ivoyal, and recovered 15 tonnes of tobacco products from there. Two vehicles were seized and the building was sealed.

The police arrested M. Balaji, 27, of Karanodai, R. Ranjith Kumar Yadav, 27, and Babu Lal Yadav, 40, of Uttar Pradesh. Investigat­ions are on.

This is a major seizure in recent days. The seized goods had been valued at over ₹2 crore, police said.
