With an aim to approach projects with an intellectual and artistic rigor, Ar. Bhanu Kharbanda of DRAW Design Research Workshop takes us to a visual tour of his recently concluded project, Tony & Guy in Faridabad
Name of the project: Toni & Guy, Faridabad
The developer: DRAW Design Research Workshop
Location: Sector 14, Faridabad
Typologies: Luxury hair & beauty salon
Design Team: Ar. Bhanu Kharbanda, Saurabh Kathuria and Sanaa Gupta
Catering to the upwardly, cosmopolitan clientele of the vicinity, the Tony & Guy is spread across 1,550 sqft and was designed to create a distinctive salon spaceinside and out-to help introduce the brand to its setting. Talking about the challenge while setting the space, Bhanu Kharbanda shares, “The aim was to create a unique identity with the help of the building facade and the desired functionality of a salon. We were asked to create different spaces for varied activities in order to create an overall continuous and homogeneous space.” The salon uses a warm and grounded design strategy, centered around an industrial look and feel. The spatial layout helps craft a largely free-flowing interior space. As you enter, a reception accosts the visitors, opposite to which lies a waiting area. The wall behind the reception desk blends elements of branding and materiality, lending a unique identity to the salon. Lined with the hair-cutting stations on both sides, a loosely defined aisle leads to the hair wash stations. The private rooms for pedicure, manicure are placed on the upper floor to provide a tranquil and serene environment- relaxed and aloof from the hustle. The walls finished in white create an interesting contrast with the black ceiling, left exposed to exude a raw and rough look. The grey tile flooring in contrast with the white walls creates stark and visually appealing interiors, whereas rooms dedicated to specific services have wood textured tiles for imparting a softer, more soothing environment to the users. Circular mirrors suspended from the ceiling and innovative lighting design adds a spirit of playful drama to the interior space. “Our primary site goal is to create a strong sense of “place,” by enhancing or transforming the existing site in a unique and provocative way,” concludes Bhanu.
