Human rights attorney Miriam Rothbart and her developer husband Stan discovered the mesmerising Palm Springs house during a trip to the nearby Coachella festival and instantly fell in love. The house being altered over the years, has all the features of an ideal mid- century retreat home. The designer Martyn stripped the house back to its shell and reconfigured the rooms and expanded the kitchen. The next move - adding a little Palm Springs drama with floor- to- ceiling glass doors and glamourous furniture from the 1960s. To create an intensity, the designer covered the ceiling with custom silver wallpaper to create an infinity effect and illusionary heights above the dining room and the master bedroom. Once inside the house, the black and white photography collection of iconic rock musician on the walls from the 1970s will solicit your attention. This monochromatic palette was used as an inspiration for the house whilst

adding burst of bright colours. As a result, the main living spaces are a calm oasis of black, whites, greys and chrome. It creates a relaxed atmosphere complemented by bright green leather dining chairs by the iconic mid- century American furniture- maker Paul Evans. Stan adds, “Materials form an important part of the balance of an interior. I adore exotic skins and leather as they capture the spirit and tactile component necessary to a room. You’ll notice in the bedroom the furs by Fendi were added to give a glamorous, soft edge to the interior. As it gets cold at night in the desert, especially in winter, the fur adds a luxurious layer of warmth.” The cabinetry throughout the house, including the kitchen, bathroom and interior doors are white lacquer and has a wonderful sheen that catches the light whilst being extremely hardy for use. Stan loves the layers of white in the house. He says, “It feels perfectly correct to capture the airy, sunny atmosphere of Palm Springs. It is also historically correct to the period and style of the house.” Las Palmas area, where the house is located is considered the most prestigious neighborhood in Palm Springs where some of the greatest stars lived in the 50’s and 60’s including Elvis Presley, ZaZa Gabor, Frank Sinatra and Cher. The Rothbart’s home is a perfect place to relax, rejuvenate and re- center.
