The Ideal Home and Garden

HOUSE OF THE MONTH

Nicole and Tom Salvesen’s London home reeks of looks from the bygone victorian era. A sneak-peek inside the home

A Victorian-era home from South-West London

iIt was in the year 2013 that wellknown interior designers Nicole Salvesen and Mary Graham founded Salvesen Graham, and set shop in London. The designers work on private homes in town and the countryside in the UK and abroad. They believe in bringing a fresh interpretation to traditional and classical interiors and therefore have developed a style that layers colour, texture and pattern to a fantastic effect. This is the style that can be seen throughout Nicole’s own Victorian styled terrace home. In 2016, with a baby on the way, Nicole and her husband felt a need to refurbish their home to accommodate a growing family and regular visiting family and friends. The work when completed, transformed the home, increasing the feeling of space with bright colours and more streamlined rooms.

As you enter the house, you’ll notice that the sitting room features a mixture of complementary greens and blues and an array of patterned and vibrant fabrics. The fireplace is surrounded by fitted shelves filled with books that Nicole has

chosen to colour coordinate. This is a method she says, “that helps to bring a sense of calm to the space.” A little away from this cosy room is the open-plan kitchen where the couple have created an open space for entertaining the extended family and friends. Also, what cannot be ignored is that in the sitting area, more fitted joinery including drawers provide a space for Nicole’s cookery books and her vast collection of glassware - the highlight, it’s completely hidden away from the children’s toy area. The four bedrooms on the first and the second floor don’t disappoint, and follow the same rules as the ground floor with plenty of storage. Typical touches of a Salvesen Graham interior can also be seen, colour, pattern and a feeling of a very comfortable and liveable interior. Nicole says, “This house in the past felt cramped, devoid of breathing space, is now full of interest and life; with a place for everything, and most importantly the renewed space has given the family a home that they always yearned for.”
