Environment conscious sustainable brands

What makes some brands rich isn’t necessarily their shiny surfaces, luxurious materials or the sky-high prices, but their awareness of giving back to the society while providing the best of the best. TIHG brings you some of the most luxurious brands in the market who have sustainability at their core

Fort Standard

Staunch defenders of traditional artisanal methods of production, Fort Standard embodies a new idea of what an industrial design studio should be: a reflection in which creativity has to be inspired by methods of traditional production, sustainable design and materials, which focuses on a “warmcontemporary” aesthetic. Designs include the furniture collection range, candelabra sprue, mirror low profile, counterweight lamps and the crest can opener. Recently, the brand took a step forward in quality, with their latest limited edition furniture collection titled Qualities of Material. A selection of pieces created from wood, leather and stone, adding unexpected qualities to these source materials.

Avocado Green Mattresses

Avocado Green Mattresses, designed in Hoboken and handmade in California, are made using only the finest organic certified, natural and non-toxic materials. The brand’s mission is to be the most respected source for organic and natural mattresses, pillows and bedding at affordable prices — while maintaining environmentally conscious, ethical and sustainable business practices — to help safeguard your health and protect the planet. They also have a vegan certified mattress, which uses 100 per cent USDA certified organic cotton fiber, farmed using NOP farming standards, instead of organic wool. It’s certified by Vegan Action® to not contain animal products and is a PETA-Approved vegan product.

ABC Carpet & Home

ABC Carpet & Home is a portal that supports continuous improvement in minimising their collective environmental footprint and maximising social justice. They aspire to manifest a universal exchange where spirit, sustainability, culture, currency, and creation coexist; a holistic sensory experience to inform and inspire participation. Through the expression of passion with beauty as a tool, they present commerce as a vehicle for insight and for action in the aid of creating a better world. Sourcing goods that are created with sustainability and fair labor standards in mind, they have pioneered a path, creating and nurturing a marketplace built on craftsmanship, quality and integrity.

Mater

Mater is a conscious and ethical design brand with a strong design philosophy and great craftsmanship. It combines exclusive high-end furniture and lighting, with working methods that support people, local craft traditions and the environment. The aesthetic of Mater has clear references to Scandinavian minimalism and the designs are all made with sustainably or ethically sourced materials. Designed for both commercial and residential use, Mater strive to avoid and minimise any adverse impact on society, by following ethical and sustainable production criteria and creating products that will both stand the test of time and inspire the consumer to cherish and savour them.

Tom Dixon

Tom Dixon’s collection Swirl is a series of geometric forms stacked upon one another to create multidimensional, functional sculptures. It is a family of candleholders, bookends, vases and tables, each with their own distinct silhouette, colouration and personality. A mysterious new material that resembles 3D marbled paper yet has the weight of stone has been used. The unique process to make the material involves recycling the powdered residue from the marble industry, mixed with pigment and resin to create blocks of material that can then be sawn, sliced and turned on a lathe. Substantial in weight, smooth in texture and bold in pattern, Swirl will inject a fresh pop sensibility into any setting.
