We asked Purcell to share hallway sprucing up ideas, and here she goes...

Just because it's not a room in transitional sense, doesn't mean it should be neglected. The hallway is the first thing you or your guests see when they enter your house, so it is actually the first space that decides the tone and vibe of the rest of the home. According to Yovnne Purcell, its a good idea to spruce it up a little with some clever ways to make it look like an essential part of your home and not just a pathway into your house.

-Colours Are Good

A coat of paint will brighten up any dark hallway and with so many bright and cheerful paint options, you don't really ned to stick to whites. You can also brighten up your hallway by using graphic wallpaper with vertical stripes or use removable wall paper or peel and stick wallpaper and decals. An easy way out is hanging a wall art and using this space for a gallery wall or a picture ledge shelf for your favourite art or family portraits.

-Expand With Mirror

Another good idea is to use a large mirror which not only reflects light but also gives the illusion of space, especially in small spaces.

-Get Floored

Putting down a bright mat or a runner can define the space and make it feel instantly warmer.

-The Fifth Wall

Another thing you can do to brighten an entrance hallway is to paint the ceiling in a contrasting colour to the walls or you can go a step further by wallpapering the ceiling.

-Add A Little Something

If you have the space, simple storage is a great idea for shoes, boots and schools bags to keep bedrooms tidy and will give your hallway another purpose. You can use a storage bench or if you have a narrow hall there's some great wall mounted storage available to keep the floor free of clutter. Use a narrow console in your hall to display trinkets and mementos. Keep coats in the closet and display hats and pretty tote bags on hooks or coat racks.
