Behind The Design
Kara Sabi is all about...
Finding and appreciating beauty in imperfection and reflecting that idea through handcrafted ceramics. It draws from the Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi that believes that nothing can ever be perfect, permanent or complete; and that the process of ageing enriches the experience of life, rather than diminishes its quality of life.
Design to me...
A culmination of personality, functionality and aesthetics. A good design should be purposeful experiential (be able to evoke an emotion in a person) and at the same time reflect who you are as a person.
Through my designs...
I wish to remind everyone to appreciate and acknowledge natural ageing and inconsistencies; to not see it as a flaw, rather cherish it and embrace the imperfections in their daily lives. I aim for my designs to be thoughtful and provocative and to be sort of an antidote for the standerdised mass produced items available. Kara Sabi collection includes wall decor (installations), sculptures, tableware.
I draw inspiration from...
The changes nature brings along with it in its course of time. I am drawn to architectural ruins, weathered walls, fading wood, broken or chipped edges, peeling paint and anything that bears the mark of time. What it once was and what remains today is what really excites me the most and I try to explore that space in my work.
What I’ve always loved about my work...
The creative space for imagination and experimentation, the tactility of the material, a perfect combination of technical skill and intuition and the fact that because clay comes from the earth, it has a way of keeping you grounded and humble.
I’m currently working on...
Setting up my own studio (I was working out of a community studio until recently) and simultaneously doing up interior décor for an upcoming café. Agenda for Kara Sabi in near future... take up more projects for doing décor for residential and commercial spaces. Marketing strategy...
Social media presence works as a great platform in creating key exposure for Kara Sabi. I keep posting new works on Instagram. Harnessing the power of social media is not only cost effective but it also enables to reach a bigger, global audience. (karasabi.com)
