SUV that mowed down two traced to Noida, say police

ONE OF the two brothers injured in a hit-and-run at Aurobindo Marg a week ago succumbed to injuries in hospital and investigat­ions have led the police to the doorstep of a company’s office in Noida.

The vehicle involved in the hit-and-run is suspected to be a newly launched Volvo XC90 SUV and it is registered in the name of the company, said police.

“On the night of September 18, the SUV first hit the brothers ? Harikesh (35) and Rakesh (26) ? who were on a scooter and then sped away after hitting police barricades,” said Jatin Narwal, Deputy Commission­er of Police (New Delhi district), Sunday.

“Harikesh succumbed to injuries during treatment at RML Hospital. His brother was discharged after treatment. It was total blind case for us, but after putting lot of efforts, we have traced the car to Noida,” Narwal added. He declined to share details.

Sources said investigat­ions revealed the SUV was speeding and was coming from the direction of INA Market.

“The complainan­t in the case, sub-inspector Raghunath, who was present at the police picket, said the impact of the accident was so powerful that both the victims were thrown into the air and landed in the adjoining service lane. The front portion of the car was badly damaged, but the driver managed sped away towards Safdarjung Road after hitting the police barricades. Police were not able to note down the registrati­on number, but noted that it was white in colour,” said a police officer.

After registerin­g a case at Tughlak Road police station, a team was formed and a forensics team found some parts of the car at the spot of the accident.

“After examining them, it came to fore that the parts belonged to Volvo XC90 SUV, which was recently launched in India. Investigat­ors approached the car company and got a list of 50 people who had bought this SUV in white colour and started meeting them,” the police officer added.

After meeting meeting 32 people who owned this SUV, police zeroed in on the vehicle suspected to be involved in the hit-and-run at Sector 10 in Noida.

The SUV was parked inside the garage of a company which deals in providing dry ash handling solutions to the power industry, said the officer.

“Police found the SUV had been in an accident and the bumper was damaged. Now, police are trying to ascertain as who was driving the car at the time of the incident,” the officer added.
