Over 6,500 booked in 3 months for drunk driving

- EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

THE DELHI Police has issued more than 6,000 challans pertaining to drunk driving in the Capital so far this year. This was an uptick from the number of challans — 5,384 — issued during the same period last year, said officers.

According to data shared by the Delhi traffic police, they recorded a “significant surge” in cases of commuters driving under the influence of alcohol, in the first three months itself.

From January to March 31 this year, data showed, the Delhi traffic police booked 6,591 violators, compared to 5,384 in 2023 and 399 in 2022.

The report shared by the Delhi traffic police read: “According to the statistics, there has been a notable increase in the number of cases related to drunk driving between January and March 2024, compared to the corresponding period in the previous years.”

It stated that the “increase in such incidents is alarming, and demands immediate attention from both law enforcement agencies and the public”.

Further, the Delhi traffic police said that it has conducted a “comprehensive analysis” of the top 10 traffic circles with the highest number of challans issued so far this year.

The report stated: “This analysis sheds light on areas where traffic violations are most prevalent, allowing targeted enforcement efforts to improve road safety and compliance”.

At 333, most challans were issued in Rajouri Garden this year so far, followed by Samaypur Badli with 252 challans, said officers.

“Driving under the influence of alcohol poses a grave risk not only to the individual behind the wheel, but also to passengers, pedestrians, and other motorists on the road... it impairs decisionmaking capacity, slows reaction time, increases the likelihood of accidents causing injuries or fatalities...,” said the Delhi traffic police in a statement.
