48 HOURS, two states and 1,400 kilometres: After allegedly killing his live-in partner and stuffing her body inside an almirah at their Dabri, Dwarka, home, 27-year-old Vipul Tailor took a long route to his hometown in Surat, Gujarat, to escape police who were hot on his trail.

However, due to an accident in Bhilwara, Rajasthan, and the discretion of the ambulance driver ferrying him, Tailor landed in police net in Udaipur, according to officials.

On April 3, police found the body of Rukhsar alias Riya, 26, in a seated position inside a large wardrobe with sliding doors at her house. Superficial wounds and strangulation marks were evident, suggesting resistance, said DCP (Dwarka) Ankit Singh.

Police learnt the woman had been living with Tailor who was conspicuous by his absence.

A police team supervised by the DCP and led by Inspector Kamlesh Kumar, in-charge of Special staff ofdw ark a district, began its probe and found tailor was present in the flat in the morning.

“After an alys ingcctv footage, we learned that Tailor left around 9pm in his vehicle, a Maruti Ciaz. It was ascertained that he had crossed Sohna, Haryana, and eventually the Mumbai Express way toll plaza ,” added police. In Sohna, Tailor made a call to his family in surat using the phone at a petrol pump, in a bid to avoid getting caught, said police.

His next stop was Kota, Rajasthan, where he stopped for a few hours before heading to Chittorgarh, they added.

Continuing his journey to Gujarat, he met with an accident in Bhilwara, said police.

“He was driving at a high speed and crashed into an electricity pole,” said an official who was part of the raiding team.

Locals rushed him to a hospital but after he regained some consciousness, he called a private ambulance and left for Gujarat.

The police, which was closely tracking Tailor, caught hold of the ambulance driver's number and called him, informing that he was ferrying a murder accused.

“We discreetly asked the driver to turn around and he complied. Tailor was a little woozy at the time. By the time he regained full consciousness and realised what was happening, we had closed in on him in Udaipur,” said the officer quoted above.

He was arrested on April 5. Said the DCP, “According to the father of the victim, Rukhsar got married to a man based in Surat in 2017. After her divorce, she befriended Tailor.”

The deceased's six-year-old daughter resides with her maternal grandfather, Mustkeen.
