2 children found dead at home, father’s body on railway tracks

- UPASIKA SINGHAL

ON FRIDAY, an East Delhi resident called up his brother Shyam Singh, 42, on his phone but received no response. When he could not get through to Shyam even on Saturday, he went to his house, situated in Pandav Nagar's Shashi Garden area, only to find it locked with a faint smell emanating from inside. He called up the police, who broke open the locks. The man froze at what he saw inside.

The bodies of his 15-year-old nephew and 9-year-old niece, with their throats apparently slit, were lying on a bed in one of the rooms while his brother's wife Sannu, also 42, was lying unconscious on the floor. His brother, meanwhile, was nowhere to be seen.

By evening, the man, whose name could not be confirmed at the time of going to press, learnt that his brother Shyam had been found dead on the railway tracks near Anand Vihar Railway Station.

“It was learnt that an unidentified body was found by Government Railway Police on April 19. The body was found on the tracks and the cause of the death was determined to be a train accident. The body was subsequently identified as Shyam's by his brother,” said DCP East Apoorva Gupta.

Shyam's wife, meanwhile, was rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital before being shifted to AIIMS. She is said to be in a critical condition, said police sources.

A case of murder and attempt to murder has been lodged by police in the case. A post-mortem examination shall be conducted to ascertain the nature of injuries, police sources added.

No signs of discord, say neighbours

According to the residents of the area, the couple showed no signs of marital discord and had been living in the area peacefully since they moved into the flat they had bought a year ago.

“We saw the woman just a few days ago, bringing her children back after 'kanjak' for Navratri,” said Renu (40), who lives in the building opposite the family.

When asked if she sensed anything amiss on days prior to the discovery of the bodies, she said, “We heard no noises or agitated voices. We saw that the house had been locked and the lights and fans were still running inside. It is only when the foul odour started coming yesterday (Friday) that we started to feel concerned.”

Police are yet to ascertain the motive behind the killings, or the day they took place.

According to Sannu's brother-in-law, Amrit Lal, she was found with injuries on her head and an eye. He said he suspected her jaw to have been broken as well. He said she was breathing faintly when he took her to AIIMS.
