With new trial plan, Delhi traffic police aims at quicker resolution to congestions on roads

TRAFFIC CONGESTION — mainly due to accidents, vehicle breakdowns, or a traffic violation — is not new to delhi roads. now, delhi traffic police has come up with a plan to ensure quicker resolution to the problem.

For the last one month, on a trial basis, they have expanded the duties of traffic constables in three districts: Instead of standing at one place, directing traffic on intersections, the constables would supervise a whole stretch assigned to them in case of a traffic jam, officials said.

A senior officer said that it was being noticed that traffic officers, usually constable-level officials, deployed at intersections, used to stay at one spot. In the event of congestion, officers had to be rushed in separately based on calls made to the Traffic Control Room at Delhi Traffic Police' s headquartersat to dapur.“t he mobile prosecution team would then be deployed and officers would take action on the cause, and eventually help clear up the traffic,” said an officer.

The officer said that now, a trial plan for effective traffic management has been introduced in North, Central and East Delhi, where the traffic officer deployed on the intersection will also manage the congestion. “e-challan issuing machines have now been provided to them too and this will ensure that the constable is responsible for an entire stretch instead of being deputed in a stationary position, which was leading to wastage of manpower and more time in clearing out traffic ...” said another officer.

The officer said that common causes of congestion mostly range from bus breakdowns to construction activities to simply traffic violations .“instead of police officers being deployed separately to clear out a road for traffic, the constables will have a better idea about the situation and can easily handle them,” said a source.

“We have made the arrangementon a trial basis and will study its impact as to how much and how soon the congestion is being reduce data stretch. based on this, the plan will be implemented in a few more districts ," said an officer.
