The New Indian Express - - TAMIL NADU -

Chennai: Tamil Manila Congress leader GK Vasan has urged State and Central governments to address plight of fishermen. A section of fishermen and functionaries of Tamizhaga Mechanised Boat Fishermen Association, led by Venugopal, president, met Vasan on Friday and submitted a memorandum seeking his support for their strike since October 3. In a statement, Vasan said fishermen were finding it difficult to venture into the sea due to the steep hike in the price of diesel. Hence, they have urged the Centre to provide fuel at production cost. Several boats, which were confiscated by Sri Lanka were entirely damaged. They had not been handed over for the last three years. Hence, the State and Central governments should take steps to offer `30 lakh as solatium for damaged boats. To highlight their demands, fishermen of various districts from Kanniyakumari to Cuddalore were on an indefinite strike since October 3, he said. ENS
