Theni for­est fire: New trekking routes an­nounced

Chen­nai: The govern­ment has an­nounced three trekking routes -easy, mod­er­ate and tough- in Kot­takudi re­served for­est in Theni district. All trekking was banned in the area fol­low­ing the Ku­rangini for­est fire on March 11 this year, killing sev­eral trekkers. An of­fi­cial re­lease said a com­mit­tee of se­nior IPS of­fi­cers, who in­ves­ti­gated the in­ci­dent, for­mu­lated var­i­ous reg­u­la­tions on the route, tim­ings, and train­ing re­quired by guides, keep­ing the pro­tec­tion of for­est and the wildlife in mind. Trekkers will have to pay `200, 350 and 500 for easy, mod­er­ate and tough trek re­spec­tively. For­eign na­tion­als will have to pay `1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 re­spec­tively. Ac­cord­ing to the new reg­u­la­tions, ev­ery group of five per­sons go­ing on easy and mod­er­ate trek should take a guide. Peo­ple go­ing on the tough trek should take a guide and for­est ranger. No per­son can en­ter for­est area with­out ob­tain­ing per­mis­sion from the for­est de­part­ment, the re­lease said. ENS
