Delhi’s youth go Meow-Meow

The use of mephedrone, colloquial­ly known as MeowMeow or M-Cat has caught on with Delhi’s youth in the last one year. Sources in the Narcotics Control Bureau as well as those with access to the drug, which is a new entrant in India’s illegal drug market, say that it was introduced in the capital one year ago and since the last six months, its reach has increased.

Those with access to the drug, which is a psychotrop­ic substance designed to stimulate the functionin­g of the brain and the central nervous system, with similariti­es to cocaine, say that it is being procured from Mumbai, which is where instances of use were first reported from. The Mumbai police has recently claimed to have arrested the alleged largest supplier of the drug in the city. The Delhi police also made its first arrest of persons dealing in the drug a few weeks ago with the help of a decoy. The three persons arrested were allegedly buying the drug to supply it to students of Delhi University. The Delhi police is now on the lookout of the mastermind behind this specific deal, which was foiled. “We have come across instances of the drug being sold to students in Delhi, who sometimes take it to deal with the pressure of studying for exams,” said an officer in the NCB, which comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
