Bernard Beer Spa

-

While on the subject of immersing yourself in the local brew, Bernard Beer Spa takes things a step further — a bathtub filled with beer, it’s the stuff of dreams. Well, almost. Bernard’s is a family-owned brewery that’s quite famous for their bitter lagers. Beer baths may seem like a recent indulgence, but in truth, their history in the Czech Republic has been connected to the local lager for centuries. Although most of them are in villages outside Prague, Bernard’s is a bankable bet in the heart of Old Town. Their baths use the same ingredients that are used in brewing their beer: fresh Saaz hops, quality malt and yeast. The idea is to have a 30-minute therapeutic dip, which will nourish your skin and leave you relaxed. The best part though, is that each tub is fitted with a tap which dispenses unlimited Bernard’s 10˚ light lager straight into your mug. Gives a whole new twist to soaking in (beer) suds. If nothing else, the experience is worth the laugh and the stories you can tell after. The walk downhill is much more advisable. The grounds where the brewery stands is part of the Strahov Monastery, which was founded in 1142. In 2001, the brewpub was given a modern and functional makeover, so it no longer conveys that old world charm, but the beer (that’s been brewed in the same place since the beginning) certainly hits the spot. There are three brews on tap throughout the year — IPA, Amber lager, and a dark lager — and others that depend on the season. The food menu has mostly traditional plates and incorporates quite a bit of beer too, like the beer-onion soup and the juicy, beer-marinated spare ribs that go well with the Czech dumplings. If you’re looking for some post-prandial cultural mini-excursions, visit the beautiful libraries, Philosophical Hall, Theological Hall, and the church that’s just across the cobblestone street.
