Platform in petra was hidden in plain sight
PETRA: At Petra, which is listed as one of the new Seven Wonders Of The World, scientists recently discovered another archaelogical structure that the site can boast of. The Biblical city of Petra was carved into the red rock cliffs of Jebel al-Madhabah, and is believed to be the capital of the Nabateans in 312 BCE. Through satellite imagery, aerial drone photography and ground surveys, archaeologists located the unique double platform that was “hidden in plain sight” all these years. “We know it’s large, it’s significant, it’s important. It probably would have had some kind of a public function,” archaeologist Sarah Parcak told NPR. “Could it be used for religious purposes? Was it some sort of public administrative structure? I wish I knew.” Although scientists have explored the ruins extensively, new discoveries keep surfacing.
