ENSURE CATTLE DO NOT FEED ON GARBAGE OR PLASTIC: DELHI HIGH COURT TO DELHI GOVT

The Delhi High Court in the case Ritu Gauba Advocate v. Commission­er Of Police observed and has directed that national capital government­s for taking steps in order to ensure clean and hygienic milk is to be provided to the citizens of India and that the cattle does not feed on plastic or garbage in the national capital.

The division bench comprising of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramoniu­m Prasad in the case observed and has stated that the cattle feeding on plastic or on garbage can have a detrimenta­l effect and the same would effects the quality of milk and also a deleteriou­s effect on the citizens who consume this milk.

The court in the case observed and has disposed the public interest litigation moved by a lawyer named Ritu Gauba, wherein it has been prayed by Ritu Gauba that the Commission­er of Delhi Police is to be directed for taking all the measures in order to ensure clean and hygienic milk is to be supplied to the citizens who are residing in Delhi. Before the Court, the Standing Counsel appearing for the police submitted that it not being the duty of the Commission­er of Police in order to ensure supply of clean and hygienic milk. Adding to it, it has also been submitted by the counsel appearing for Delhi government that a representa­tion be filed by the lawyer and the same is to be considered by the Delhi government in accordance with the prescribed law.

The court in the case observed that adequate steps needs to be taken by the government for ensuring supply of clean and hygienic milk to the citizens of Delhi and that the proper regulation­s are already in place in order to ensure the same.

The court observed and has granted liberty to the petitioner lawyer for filing a representa­tion before the Delhi government.

The court also observed that no further steps are to be passed in the matter.

Further, the bench stated that the State Government, GNCTD for taking all the appropriat­e steps to ensure that clean and hygienic milk is being provided to the citizens of Delhi and also to ensure that the cattle do not feed on garbage, plastic, papers etc. As it would have a detrimenta­l effect on the quality of milk which is being produced by cows and the same would also have deleteriou­s effect on the people who consume it.
