Jesus washes disciples’ feet

Let us reflect on a profound moment in the life of Jesus that stands as a cornerstone of our faith and a powerful example of divine humility: the washing of the disciples’ feet. This event, recorded in the Gospel of John chapter 13, presents a striking reversal of roles and expectations, where the Master kneels before His servants. In many cultures, including the one where Jesus lived, it is customary for disciples to wash the feet of their master as a sign of respect and subservience. This task, often performed by the lowest servant in a household, is a vivid symbol of status and hierarchy. Yet, in this critical moment, Jesus turns this cultural norm on its head. Why does He do this? Jesus answers this question Himself: “You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you” (John 13:13-15).

Jesus teaches that humility takes precedence over hierarchy and that authentic leadership is exercised not by towering over others but by stooping to serve them. We learn service as sanctity: Jesus sanctifies the act of service, demonstrating that holiness is found not in exalting oneself but in humbling oneself. Serving is not merely a duty but a path to divine blessing. And love in action: The washing of feet is an act of love, a silent sermon. It teaches us that love is not just a feeling or a word but an action. Christ’s love is a love that acts, that washes feet, that cares for the needs of others, however mundane or menial. Let us embrace humility and serve willingly. Service does not need to be grand orsignificant; often, small acts of kindness leave the most profound impact. Let your life be a testament to the love of Christ. Love through your actions—patience, kindness, forgiveness, or charity. Let every action speak of the love Christ has shown us.
