Navi Mumbai: The Alibaug police on Sunday booked Raigad district hospital’s civil surgeon Dr Ajit Gawli for hurting the religious sentiments of the Dalit community by allegedly uploading an objectionable image of Gautam Buddha on his WhatsApp status. Baban Hate has been booked as a co-accused for sending the image to Dr Gawli and orthers on WhatsApp.

Around 8pm, members of Dalit Youth Panther marched to the police station and demanded action against Dr Gawli and Hate. Acting on a complaint by Dalit Youth Panther spokesperson Nilesh Mohite (30), the police filed an FIR against the duo under IPC sections 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention). Senior inspector Dashrath Patil said, “Dr Gawli claimed that he did not intentionally hurt anyone’s religious sentiments. He said that the image got accidentally uploaded on his WhatsApp staus from his phone’s photo gallery.” —George Mendonca
