Egg on the face as Bapat withdraws defamation case

The Times of India (Mumbai edition) - - TIMES CITY -

Food and Civil Supplies Minister Girish Bapat suffered an embarrassment recently when he withdrew the criminal defamation suit against NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik without assigning any reason.

In December 2015, when the state was facing shortage of tur dal, Malik had blamed Bapat saying he was involved in the Rs 2,000-crore tur dal scam.

Malik’s contention was that despite specific observations of the department’s senior bureaucrats, Bapat had lifted the stock limit on food grains following which the prices of tur dal skyrocketed to over Rs 150 per kg. It was then alleged that a policy decision on diluting the stock limit had directly benefited traders from Maharashtra and neighbouring states. ges, they initiate criminal and civil defamation proceedings, but do not take litigation to its logical conclusion as they are scared of facing cross-examination in court. As for Malik, he says Bapat’s move has only given credence to his allegations.
