Denied booze, govt doctors run riot in Agra, 25 held
Agra: Twenty five junior doctors of Agra’s state-run S N Medical College were arrested for vandalising a local pub, assaulting its staff, beating up policemen and tearing off their uniform when the pub’s staff refused to serve them liquor after closing hours. The incident occurred at the Ashoka pub and restaurant near Delhi Gate late on Saturday night.
SSP Amit Pathak said 15 junior doctors were still in jail while 10 others were granted bail. Forty other unidentified medical college staff were also booked for vandalism. After the incident, doctors at the college went on a strike, brining its emergency ward to a halt on Sunday. The strike was called off after senior administrative officers held a meeting with the college principal and other authorities. But, junior doctors didn’t return to work.
Pathak told TOI, “We met the principal and senior staff members and asked them why no internal action was taken against junior doctors who were booked even on earlier occasions in various assault and vandalism cases. .”
Police said the FIR was lodged based on a complaint by pub manager Shivaji Ohja. The doctors and medical staff went to the pub to celebrate the birthday of their colleague.
Ojha said, “The doctors were adamant on their demand to be served more liquor. When our staff informed them about the closing time, they started hurling abuses and misbehaved with the staff. They called nearly 40 other college staff, who vandalised the pub.” Pub owner Sunil Sarin (82) was also assaulted when he attempted to pacify them, he added.
