Allahabad will soon be renamed Prayagraj: Yogi
Allahabad: UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday said Allahabad will soon be rechristened Prayagraj. The state has earlier renamed Mughalsarai Junction and Mughalsarai as Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar, after the co-founder of Bharaitya Jana Sangh.
The formal announcement on Saturday came after governor Ram Naik — in a meeting of Kumbh Mela Margdarshak Mandal, the advisory body for Kumbh Mela-2019 — approved a proposal for the same. The proposal was made by nodal body of Hindu monastics Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad (ABAP) and other monks. The meet, which the CM also attended, was held at the city’s Circuit House.
“The akhara parishad and other monks in attendance proposed renaming Allahabad as Prayagraj. The governor accepted the proposal,” Yogi said. He referred to Allahabad as Prayag saying, “The confluence of two rivers is a ‘prayag’, and in Allahabad three rivers: Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati meet, so it is king of ‘prayags,’ Prayagraj.”
