Al­la­habad will soon be re­named Praya­graj: Yogi

Al­la­habad: UP chief min­is­ter Yogi Adityanath on Satur­day said Al­la­habad will soon be rechris­tened Praya­graj. The state has ear­lier re­named Mughal­sarai Junc­tion and Mughal­sarai as Pt Deen Dayal Upad­hyaya Junc­tion and Deen Dayal Upad­hyaya Na­gar, af­ter the co-founder of Bharaitya Jana Sangh.

The for­mal an­nounce­ment on Satur­day came af­ter gover­nor Ram Naik — in a meet­ing of Kumbh Mela Margdar­shak Man­dal, the ad­vi­sory body for Kumbh Mela-2019 — ap­proved a pro­posal for the same. The pro­posal was made by nodal body of Hindu monas­tics Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Par­ishad (ABAP) and other monks. The meet, which the CM also at­tended, was held at the city’s Cir­cuit House.

“The akhara par­ishad and other monks in at­ten­dance pro­posed re­nam­ing Al­la­habad as Praya­graj. The gover­nor ac­cepted the pro­posal,” Yogi said. He re­ferred to Al­la­habad as Prayag say­ing, “The con­flu­ence of two rivers is a ‘prayag’, and in Al­la­habad three rivers: Ganga, Ya­muna and Saraswati meet, so it is king of ‘prayags,’ Praya­graj.”
