Haridwar: Swami Gopal Das, a seer who like Ganga crusader Swami Sanand had been fasting since June 24 for a clean and free-flowing Ganga, was shifted to the hospital by the Haridwar district authorities late night on Friday. After Swa- mi Sanand’s demise on Thursday, Gopal Das — who was observing his protest fast in Badrinath — had been shifted to Matri Sadan on Friday. However Matri Sadan head Swami Shivanand advised him to end his protest and resume it after October 20 when the Navratra pe- riod ended. Following this, Gopal Das had agreed to take lemon water but was still shifted to AIIMS Rishikesh.

Speaking to TOI, Swami Shivanand said, “Swami Gopal Das had reached Matri Sadan ashram for giving his sacrifice for Ganga and wanted to start his fast unto death but we requested him to defer it till after October 20. Even though he agreed, the district administration sent officials here at midnight and forcefully shifted Gopal Das to AIIMS.” He added, “It is clear that they are planning some foul play with him as well.”

FIGHT TO SAVE THE RIVER: Though Gopal Das had agreed to Matri Sadan’s request to defer his fast, he was still shifted to AIIMS Rishikesh
