Allahabad: Amid the raging #MeToo movement across the country, vicepresident Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday rooted for more empowerment of women and also backed 33% reservation for them.

“We always raise the slogan, ‘Bharat Mata ki jai’ and not ‘Bharat pitah ki jai’. All rivers have female names and so are names of goddess which come before their male counterparts... ,” said Naidu at a function held at the Indian Institute of Information and Technology (IIITA). He added: “Our goddesses have also been given important responsibilities... Mata Saraswati was perhaps the education minister, Lakshmi the finance minister and Durga the defence minister who would kill demons.”
