20 days be­fore Mizo elec­tion, hunt for new top poll of­fi­cer

New Delhi: With less than 20 days to go for as­sem­bly polls in Mi­zo­ram, the elec­tion com­mis­sion has ini­ti­ated the process for re­place­ment of Mi­zo­ram chief elec­toral of­fi­cer ( CEO)—fac­ing mas­sive protests from lo­cal civil so­ci­ety or­gan­i­sa­tions—by call­ing for a panel of names for the CEO’s post.

The de­ci­sion to call for a panel of names was taken at ameet­ing of the full com­mis­sion on Satur­day. Sources in Nir­vachan Sadan said a fi­nal call on re­plac­ing CEO S B Shashank will be taken af­ter ex­am­in­ing the suit­abil­ity of of­fi­cers to be in­cluded in the panel. The EC may meet again on Mon­day to de­cide on the mat­ter based on the re­port by deputy poll com­mis­sioner Sudip Jain af­ter dis­cus­sions with the Mi­zo­ram NGO Co­or­di­na­tion Com­mit­tee; Shashank’s tes­ti­mony and dis­cus­sions on the panel of names for the new CEO.
