20 days before Mizo election, hunt for new top poll officer
New Delhi: With less than 20 days to go for assembly polls in Mizoram, the election commission has initiated the process for replacement of Mizoram chief electoral officer ( CEO)—facing massive protests from local civil society organisations—by calling for a panel of names for the CEO’s post.
The decision to call for a panel of names was taken at ameeting of the full commission on Saturday. Sources in Nirvachan Sadan said a final call on replacing CEO S B Shashank will be taken after examining the suitability of officers to be included in the panel. The EC may meet again on Monday to decide on the matter based on the report by deputy poll commissioner Sudip Jain after discussions with the Mizoram NGO Coordination Committee; Shashank’s testimony and discussions on the panel of names for the new CEO.
