Man jumps off local to nab phone thief, lands in ICU
Navi Mumbai: A 38-year-old man, who works as an restaurant manager in Bhandup, was severely injured after he jumped off a running train while chasing a robber who snatched his phone on the train on November 2. The man, Sachindra Kumar, a Kamothe resident, is in the ICU of Apollo hospital at Belapur.
Kumar’s sibling, Gajendra (33), said, “Panvel railway cops gave wrong information about how my brother got injured. They said he fell while alighting from the train as he might have been sleepy. But CCTV footage at Belapur platform revealed the fact.”
Panvel railway police senior inspector Rajesh Babshetty said, “Kumar was in a second-class compartment, watching a movie on his mobile. Around 1.30 am, as the train left Belapur, a man in the compartment snatched his mobile and jumped from the slow moving trainand fell on the platform. Kumar chased the robber and jumped off. The train had picked up speed and Kumar fell on the platform and banged his head. The robber got up and fled, but Kumar fell unconscious due to head injury. As he was lying close to the gap between the train and platform, an on-duty home guard rushed towards him and pulled him to safety. The home guard gave priority to save Kumar rather than chasing the robber, who had escaped.”
Babshettysaid that a fellow commuter, who lives in Kharghar, deposited the victim’s bag at Kharghar station. We contacted his wife from the address in his handbag. Doctors said he has suffered occipital injury.
PSI Sitaram Mali said that the eyewitness commuter said that the robber got into the compartment at Sanpada. “We are scanning CCTV footage to find out where he got into the train to get some leads.”
