‘Retd Army captain’ lures 6 with defence jobs, cons them of ₹ 36L
Mumbai: A man from Vizag, who claimed to be a retired captain from the Indian Army, was arrested for allegedly siphoning off Rs36 lakh from six youngsters after promising them canteen attendant’s job with Principal Controllers of Defence Accounts (PCDA) Navy office in Colaba. The accused, Imandi Trinethra (56), was picked up from Mumbai airport when he arrived from Vizag on Saturdaywith six victims whom he had promised jobs. Trinethra was identified after the city crime branch posed as decoy (defence officials) got in touch with one of the victims from Vizag and asked their travel details to Mumbai. Trinethra planned to convince the victims that the date of joining has been postponed, the police said.
The city crime branch received a tip-off from the PCDA’s of- fice that they have come across a fraud that is being executed by someone from Vizag who under the pretext of giving jobs has taken money from youths in southern states. The police learnt that Trinethra, who retired from service in 2001, runs Saras- wathi Defence Academy at Visakhapatnam and assures youths of getting recruited in the defence services within a year of joining his academy.
“He collected Rs 6 lakh from each candidate and even made the victims undergo online test and medical test before travelling to Mumbai on Saturday,” said a crime branch officer.
Apolice officer said, “He claims he started as sepoy and managed to retired as Captain.”
Trinethra allegedly planned the offence after PCDA advertised 10 openings for the post of canteen attendants in Mumbai in March 28. “After undergoing the fake online test, the victims were handed over appointment letters. But the victim requested him to accompany them to the office and he agreed. Meanwhile some of the victims called PCDA office to inquire when they have to join and this alerted the officials to get more information and alert the cops,” said the officer.
On a tip-off, DCP Dilip Sawant supervised assistant commissioner of police Sanjay Kadam, assistant inspector Sunil Pawar and staff that nabbed Trinethra from Mumbai airport.
An FIR has been registered at Colaba police station.
