Navi Mumbai: Two new rakes will be used to run 40 Up and Down services for commuters on the new Uran corridor on the harbour route for Nerul-Kharkopar and Belapur-Kharkopar. There will be 20 services on each stretch, with an equal number of 10 Up and Down services from the two ends.

The rakes will be serviced at Sandpada car-shed and be parked at Nerul and Belapur suburban stations. Motormen and guards are undergoing training for operating the services on the new route, to get acclimatised to positioning of signals and curves where speed limit is lower, said the Central Railway’s deputy chief engineer’s office.

The commissioning of phase I of the corridor is an important milestone for the railways, Centre and state government, in sync with the development slogan for the upcoming 2019 polls . The mega function, with a plethora of political leaders and heavyweights, will present areport card of achievements.

Union railway minister Piyush Goyal, who is from the state, had taken keen interest in upgrading the rail infra. Several services will be dedicated electronically at the function on Sunday.

CR senior public relations officer A K Jain told TOI, “Invitations have been sent to Rajya Sabha members, irrespective of party affiliation.’’
