3 work­ing on tracks at night run over by Te­jas Ex­press

Navi Mum­bai: Three work­ers tasked with lay­ing of rail­way tracks died af­ter they were run over by the Mum­bai-bound Te­jas Ex­press near Jite sta­tion at Pen in Raigad dis­trict around 9.30pm on Sun­day.

The three work­ers, whose iden­ti­ties were not es­tab­lished till the time of go­ing to press, were con­trac­tual labour­ers.

“They were cross­ing the track when they were run over by the Kar­mali-Mum­bai Te­jas Ex­press,” said in­spec­tor Shailesh Gaik­wad of Dadar Sa­gari po­lice sta­tion. “All three sus­tained head in­juries and died on the spot.”

Gaik­wad said that the three were from Mad­hya Pradesh and had been stay­ing close to the ac­ci­dent spot. While two of them fell on one side of the track af­ter be­ing hit by the train, the third labourer fell on the other side. The bod­ies were still to be taken for a post-mortem, said the po­lice of­fi­cer.

Deputy sta­tion mas­ter at Jite rail­way sta­tion, Ra­jiv Ran­jan, con­firmed that three per­sons died af­ter be­ing run over by a train. This sta­tion is a part of the Cen­tral Rail­way net­work.

An of­fi­cial from Pan­vel rail­way sta­tion said that the gen­eral man­ager of Cen­tral Rail­way is sched­uled to visit around the place in the next two weeks for which work was be­ing done at Pan­vel and a few other sta­tions. “But it’s sur­pris­ing how work­ers were work­ing on the tracks at night,” the of­fi­cial said.
