3 working on tracks at night run over by Tejas Express
Navi Mumbai: Three workers tasked with laying of railway tracks died after they were run over by the Mumbai-bound Tejas Express near Jite station at Pen in Raigad district around 9.30pm on Sunday.
The three workers, whose identities were not established till the time of going to press, were contractual labourers.
“They were crossing the track when they were run over by the Karmali-Mumbai Tejas Express,” said inspector Shailesh Gaikwad of Dadar Sagari police station. “All three sustained head injuries and died on the spot.”
Gaikwad said that the three were from Madhya Pradesh and had been staying close to the accident spot. While two of them fell on one side of the track after being hit by the train, the third labourer fell on the other side. The bodies were still to be taken for a post-mortem, said the police officer.
Deputy station master at Jite railway station, Rajiv Ranjan, confirmed that three persons died after being run over by a train. This station is a part of the Central Railway network.
An official from Panvel railway station said that the general manager of Central Railway is scheduled to visit around the place in the next two weeks for which work was being done at Panvel and a few other stations. “But it’s surprising how workers were working on the tracks at night,” the official said.
