FIR against 4 railway cops for ‘extortion’
Mumbai: Four cops attached to CSMT railway police station have been booked allegedly for extorting money from a passenger on Pushpak Express on Saturday. The cops, whose names have been withheld, were off-duty. They extorted Rs1,600 from the passenger, identified only as Murshid (22), whom they had caught smoking in a sleeper class coach. No arrest had been made until Sunday.
Their matter came to the fore when the railway police received a complaint from their counterparts at Kalyan station, where the complainant got off. “The complainant and the four cops were brought to CSMT railway police station and an FIR registered based on the complaint,” said an officer from CSMT railway police station.
“The passenger who lodged the FIR said that the four, who were in the compartment, threatened him when the train left CSMT. They had caught him before the train reached Kalyan station. He got suspicious when they failed to furnish him any receipt for Rs1,600 penalty,” said a railway police officer. A probe is on to get details about whether these four cops have committed similar offences after signing off from duty.
Senior inspector of CSMT railway police station, Hemant Bawdhankar, confirmed that an FIR has been registered against the four cops.
