New Delhi: The Delhi police special cell charged former JNU student leaders Kanhaiya Kumar, Syed Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya on Monday with sedition, criminal conspiracy and other crimes in connection with a February 9, 2016, event at the university to protest against the hanging of Parliament attack mastermind Afzal Guru. TOI had reported first, in Monday’s edition, that a chargesheet would be filed in court later in the day.

A 1,200-page chargesheet saying the 2016 event was the outcome of a well-planned conspiracy during which anti-national slogans were raised by the mob was filed in the court of metropolitan magistrate Sumit Anand, who put up the final report for a competent court to consider on Tuesday.

Apart from Khalid, Kanhaiya and Anirban, the others charged included seven Kashmiri students. None of the seven has been arrested. I would like to thank the police and Modiji. The filing of chargesheet after 3 years, ahead of elections, clearly shows it to be politically motivated. I trust the judiciary As the people have prepared their own chargesheet against this anti-people, anti-poor and communal govt, this govt once again wants to deflect attention from its failures by raking up this issue just before elections. They need to bury these failures under their lies This is a completely bogus case in which ultimately everyone will be acquitted
