Con­sta­ble held for rap­ing theft ac­cused

Mum­bai: A con­sta­ble, Mad­hukar Avhad (48), was ar­rested on Satur­day for al­legedly rap­ing a theft case ac­cused. The mar­ried woman (32), who was al­legedly caught steal­ing choco­lates from a de­part­men­tal store on Fe­bru­ary 6, said that she was raped at a lodge on Aarey Road. She told the po­lice that Avhad threat­ened to take ac­tion against her if she spoke to any­one about the rape. The cop, at­tached with the MIDC po­lice sta­tion in And­heri, is in po­lice cus­tody for two days.

The al­leged crime came to light when the woman’s hus­band found that her ob­jec­tion­able pic­tures were shared on her What­sApp ac­count. She nar­rated her al­leged or­deal to her hus­band, who then ap­proached the po­lice. De­part­men­tal ac­tion will be ini­ti­ated against Avhad on Mon­day and he will be sus­pended, said ad­di­tional com­mis­sioner of po­lice (west re­gion) Manoj Sharma. —V Narayan
