Doc tells par­ents to ‘get ven­ti­la­tor’, baby dies in MP

Bhopal: A one-and-a-half-yearold girl died of burn in­juries in Bun­delk­hand med­i­cal col­lege in MP’s Sa­gar dis­trict on Satur­day af­ter she was al­legedly de­nied a ven­ti­la­tor. When her par­ents asked for one, a doc­tor al­legedly told them to “ar­range one if you want to save the baby’s life”.

A video of the con­ver­sa­tion went vi­ral on Sun­day, lead­ing to the sus­pen­sion of Dr Jy­oti Raut. The ad­min­is­tra­tion has or­dered an in­quiry and the re­port is ex­pected on Tues­day.

The par­ents al­leged they were told the hos­pi­tal doesn’t have a ven­ti­la­tor. How­ever, med­i­cal col­lege dean G S Pa­tel said on Sun­day there are 17 ven­ti­la­tors in the col­lege.

The child, An­shika Ahir­war, was se­verely burned when boil­ing wa­ter fell on her chest and stom­ach and was ad­mit­ted on Thurs­day. When her con­di­tion wors­ened that night, Dr Raut al­legedly asked her par­ents to “ar­range a ven­ti­la­tor”. An­shika died on Fri­day.
