Sharif, Maryum return to Pak, both arrested
Ousted Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif and his daughter, Maryum, were arrested at Lahore airport on arrival from London and flown to Islamabad late on Friday, a week after being sentenced to prison in a corruption case, and less than two weeks before the Pakistan general elections on July 25.
They were expected to be taken to Adiala prison in Rawalpindi. In a video message released before his arrest, Sharif said he was returning despite knowing that he would be arrested. “I want to tell the people of Pakistan that I am going to jail for them. I am rendering this sacrifice for the future generations of Pakistan,” he said, adding the destiny of the country could change if the masses stood by him. “Such opportunities do not come often,” he added.
Nawaz and Maryum had left London Thursday night, leaving behind his ailing wife, Kulsoom, on a ventilator in a London hospital.
