Sharif, Maryum re­turn to Pak, both ar­rested

Ousted Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif and his daugh­ter, Maryum, were ar­rested at La­hore air­port on ar­rival from Lon­don and flown to Is­lam­abad late on Fri­day, a week af­ter be­ing sen­tenced to prison in a cor­rup­tion case, and less than two weeks be­fore the Pakistan gen­eral elec­tions on July 25.

They were ex­pected to be taken to Adi­ala prison in Rawalpindi. In a video mes­sage re­leased be­fore his ar­rest, Sharif said he was re­turn­ing de­spite know­ing that he would be ar­rested. “I want to tell the peo­ple of Pakistan that I am go­ing to jail for them. I am ren­der­ing this sac­ri­fice for the fu­ture gen­er­a­tions of Pakistan,” he said, adding the des­tiny of the coun­try could change if the masses stood by him. “Such op­por­tu­ni­ties do not come of­ten,” he added.

Nawaz and Maryum had left Lon­don Thurs­day night, leav­ing be­hind his ail­ing wife, Kul­soom, on a ven­ti­la­tor in a Lon­don hos­pi­tal.
